One of thrash metal's most exciting young contenders, HAZZERD, release another video giving fans further evidence of the strength and diversity of the Canadian quartet’s new album. “Unto Ashes” comes from HAZZERD’s new album, ‘The 3rd Dimension,’ out January 17th.
“’Unto Ashes’ is one of the longer songs on the record. We wanted to kinda make a song similar to ‘Battery’ by Metallica, and that being the unrelenting aggression for the first half of the song,” explains drummer/vocalist Dylan Westendorp. “The song itself is talking about Thanos from the Marvel comics. His egotistical thinking and him collecting the stones and wiping out half the planet was a pretty gnarly song topic, the chorus of the song is pretty telling on what the song is about. Also, it incorporates newer elements into our songwriting with that middle section and the gang vocals as well, plus some melody here and there. A longer cut with some cool elements woven throughout."

‘The 3rd Dimension’ will be in stores and online tomorrow, Jan. 17th as a jewelcase CD or on limited colored vinyl Rough Seas (200) for the N. American version and Mars Attacks (300) as the European retail variant, as well as a 100 limited run of cassettes exclusively from the band and label. ‘The 3rd Dimension’ is the anticipated follow-up to 2020’s ‘Delirium,’ one of the best and consistent sellers at M-Theory Audio that even received a nod from Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine who championed the group as a promising thrash hopeful, alongside Power Trip. ‘The 3rd Dimension,’ was mastered by Johnny Gasparic (Into Eternity) and features cover artwork once again by Andrei Bouzikov (Municipal Waste, Toxic Holocaust, Skeletonwitch).
“’The 3rd Dimension’ portrays our human influences through media. Whether that be television, movies, music, or video games. Each song tells its own story through a narrative inspired by something created in the 3rd Dimension (3D media). Thank you all for being so patient with us while we worked on the band as a whole and the new album over the last few years,” states Dylan. “We really can’t wait for you to hear it. This is for you -- the fans, the underground.”
“This album feels like reconnecting with an old childhood friend who was always grounded and easy to like. He’s traveled the world, gained experience, and grown in countless ways, yet somehow, he’s still the same person you remember, with all the warmth and authenticity intact. That’s exactly what Hazzerd has done here. Despite their evolution, tighter songwriting, and improved production, they’ve stayed true to their core essence, delivering the same thrash metal spirit that made them so compelling in the first place” – Decibel Warfare
“‘The 3rd Dimension’ once again proving that if a genre is done well, filled to the brim with enthusiasm and musical talent, it can never grow stale. Hazzerd have drawn back the years and discovered that the rich vein of classic thrash worship isn’t dead yet, and ‘The 3rd Dimension’ is making my fingers cramp with all the air guitaring I’ve been doing. A brilliantly fun and infectious record” – Those Once Loyal
“The 3rd Dimension’ is an album that carries all the punch and fire of a typical thrash album, yet proves atypical in every other sense, a 41-minute musical journey that takes all the best of what has been done and comes out with something that has hardly been done before.” – Sonic Perspectives
HAZZERD was initially formed by Westendorp and guitarist Brendan Malycky, two Calgary teens who were inspired by the early work of thrash legends such as Overkill, Metallica and Anthrax. After solidifying their lineup with the addition of lead guitarist Toryin Schadlich (also of Traveler) and bassist David Sprague, the group recorded their full-length debut, “Misleading Evil,” which was released via Canada's World War Now Records. The record was praised by Metal-Temple.com as “one of the strongest thrash releases of 2017,” while Dead Rhetoric called the album “an exhilarating aural ride” with a “Maiden/Priest-meets-early Metallica vibe.”
HAZZERD caught the attention of M-Theory Audio who snapped up the promising outfit and released ‘Delirium’ in 2020 taking the band to the next level and getting great critical response including Sonic Perspectives calling it “an album that embodies the best of thrash and heavy metal,” while Metal Injection wrote “rip-roaring… leaves absolutely no survivors in its wake.”
In recent years, HAZZERD has performed alongside the likes of Hatchet, Striker, Vicious Rumors, Archspire, Spellcaster and Grim Reaper in addition to playing noted Canadian festivals such as Loud As Hell and Armstrong MetalFest. Watch for regional record release shows announcing soon.
