Review of DROMOS - Failing Light | Argonauta Records

It’s one of those albums where you don’t really “start” listening and then review it afterwards - you just end up sitting inside it while it’s still going. Three tracks, all very long, all very slow. And yeah, it really is that kind of funeral doom where time just stretches out and stops behaving normally.

My Final Tomb kind of sets the tone without doing anything dramatic about it. It just moves at that extremely slow pace and stays there. What’s interesting - and this is something that comes up in different ways in other descriptions too - is that it’s not actually a total blur. You can still hear separation in the sound. It’s heavy, but not completely fused into one mass.

Death Is Silence is probably where the patience test really starts. There are sections where it honestly feels like not much is changing at all, and then something small shifts and you realize the whole thing has moved without announcing it. There’s even that moment at the end where acoustic / neofolk elements appear, and it doesn’t feel like a “break” so much as something briefly surfacing before sinking back down again.

Sinking is the long one, and you feel that length. Not in a technical sense - more in how it just keeps refusing to resolve anything. It doesn’t escalate, doesn’t really build in the usual way. It just continues, and you either lock into that or you don’t.

Vocals stay buried most of the time. Deep, guttural, sometimes a bit more expressive depending on the passage, but never really pushed forward. It fits the whole idea of the record - nothing is meant to stand out too much.

What sticks overall is less individual moments and more the feeling of restraint. The band never really pushes anything to a climax. Even when something shifts, it stays small. That can feel strangely hypnotic, or just a bit too static, depending on your mood.

I don’t think this is an album that tries to convince you of anything. It just sits in its own pace and expects you to adjust to it. And whether that works or not probably depends less on the album and more on how much patience you’ve got that day.
