DROMOS interview

Hi! Can you give a brief history of DROMOS, including the music style and the members?

Hi there! We are a funeral doom band from London, UK formed in 2019 with deep roots in London’s heavy music underground. Our music balanced the crushing weight of funeral doom with atmospheric passages to create an immersive soundscape.

Our core line up is Patrick and Amadeus on the guitars, Matt on bass and Sami on vocals. Our friends are filling in on the drums.

Could you provide more detailed information about Failing Light?

Failing Light is our debut full length, out May 15th 2026. Safe to say it’s an evolution from our two track EP from 20224. The album consists of three (long) songs, one clocking over 20 minutes. Our aim was to write an album rooted in funeral doom, yet expand to atmospheric and progressive territories. It’s a record built on presence and patience.

DROMOS has signed with Argonauta Records. Could you tell us more about that?

It is an honour to join the ranks of the many great bands that are, and have been, on Argonauta. The label’s track record speaks for itself and we’re very happy to be joining forces with them for the release of Failing Light.

What is the difference between your latest record and the band's very first one?

Our first EP consists of two songs of heavy, crushing funeral doom and the new full length album Failing Light expands and builds on it on multiple fronts. A more comprehensive, longer, immersive piece with layers that we hope will unfold even more with multiple listens.

What inspires DROMOS' music and lyric writing? What do DROMOS' lyrics talk about?

Our writing is inspired by being blown away by the music we grew up with and wanting to reach even a fraction of that level ourselves, or at least enjoy the process of trying. The lyrical themes are sorrowful and introspective, with a glimmer of hope. Burden of past actions, regret, loss and isolation. The connection between the body and the mind and the feeling of collapse.

Do you play live often? Do you enjoy performing abroad?

We’re playing a debut show at Desertfest London this year. We’ve yet to play abroad with Dromos, however, we’ve really enjoyed shows all over the world with our other projects!

How often does the band practice and work on new material?

We’re currently focussed on practising for our show at Desertfest on 16th May, and looking forward to releasing our debut full length the day before the 15th May. We will resume working on new material at some point after.

How did the band come up with the name DROMOS? What does it mean to you?

The name comes from ancient Greek referring to a passage or a gateway often leading to a tomb. The definition fit the music on our EP and our forthcoming LP which was largely finished by the time we settled on a name. Then there’s the broader concept of using an architectural term with grave-side significance: in most cases the architecture will be around a lot longer than the people who commissioned it.

And of course the name had to look ‘metal’ enough when we wrote it down and be available for use.

What are the band's plans for the near future?

We’ve got our album release and the Desertfest show coming up, and hopefully we’ll play some more shows after too.

Do you have a message for Iron Backstage readers?

Thanks for supporting underground bands like ourselves.
