Review of DEKAY - Start The Rot / Sliptrick Records

This album doesn’t mess around. It’s heavy, unapologetic industrial metal, the kind of sound that grabs you by the throat from the first track. It’s raw and dark, with themes that dig into everything we’d rather not think about - decay, betrayal, the collapse of society. It feels like the soundtrack to the end of the world, in the best and worst ways.

The opener, “Dannsa Na Cuileag,” is eerie and moody. No lyrics, just this unsettling vibe that pulls you in. Then, boom, the heavier stuff hits, and it doesn’t really let up. Tracks like “The Folly of Man” and the title track are relentless. They hit you with pounding drums, distorted guitars, and vocals that are just dripping with frustration. It’s not a “singalong” album - it’s more like a cathartic scream into the void.

That said, the intensity kind of works against it after a while. Every track goes hard, which is great at first, but halfway through, you start wanting something a little different. A quiet moment, a slower tempo - anything to break up the onslaught. Without that, the songs tend to blur together, and the album loses some of its punch by the end.

The production’s solid, though. It’s heavy and gritty, just the way it should be, but it’s not so murky that you lose the details. There’s a lot of power in the sound, even if it doesn’t really surprise you. It’s like DEKAY knows exactly what industrial fans want and delivers that - but only that.

Lyrically, it’s blunt and to the point. There’s not much poetry here, just raw emotion and anger. It fits the music, but it doesn’t leave much to chew on. The messages hit hard, but they’re not subtle, which can feel a bit repetitive over the course of the album.

Overall, Start The Rot does what it sets out to do. It’s aggressive, it’s dark, and it’s absolutely unflinching. Fans of industrial metal will eat this up, no question. But if you’re looking for something that pushes the genre into new territory or shakes up the formula, this one might fall a bit short.
