Can you talk to us more about Century in the Boilpit?
Century in the Boilpit is our favorite album to date. Not just in the quality of the content, but writing and recording this was awesome. This is our first album with Matt playing bass. We were excited to bring the third part of The Woodsman saga to everybody.
Did any event, in particular, inspire you to write this album? Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
We just try to play the dirtiest and loudest music that we can. We are inspired by having way too much fun during practice. Also John Fogarty. Chip especially is thinking about CCR every time he plays.
Any plans to release a new video for some track?
We actually have released a video that is also an NFT that grants exclusive perks to our most diehard fans. On Feb 3rd, we are going to release it on all our social platforms but the perks are tied to the NFT.
How was the recording and writing process?
Recording was a fucking blast. It's one of our favorite parts of actually playing as a band. That first time you get to hear the song all put together, even the unmixed material, is absolutely amazing. We tried to be very strict about the recording process this time while still making its have a raw feel without doing too much editing. We were more prepared for this recording than we have been in the past and Eric Alper at Ugly Duck Studios was instrumental in every part of recording and mixing this album.
As far as the wriitng process we usually start with someone bringing a riff to practice and we build on that and develop other riffs off the same theme. Then once we have a song we start figuring what the story of the song is and write lyrics around that. We film ourselves practicing the song at practice so everybody has something to reference.
What was it like to work with no label?
It was great. It was just about the same as having a label. Honestly in our experience we haven't been blown away with the utility of having a label own our music.
How much does each musician influence the album?
We all carry equal weight whether it be coming up with riffs or lyrics. Everybody contributes and is involved.
Any plans to hit the road?
We have a few shows in April where we are going to stretch southwest a bit.
What else is happening next in Scalpel’s world?
We are really focusing on making sure as many people hear the album as possible. We are focused on sharing the NFT around and giving our fans something interesting to have that gives them lifetime perks in addition to the new video. Scalpel is always developing new music to infest your ears with.
