Hi HYPERIA! How have you been?
Pretty good thanks! Trying to make the best out of the current situation in the world.
Can you talk to us more about "Insanitorium"?
Insanitorium is our debut album based around the concept of being trapped inside an insane asylum, solitary confinement and mental illness. Its 10 tracks of Melodic Thrash Metal with a wide vocal range from deep growls to piercing wails and melodies.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this album? Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
I can't remember exactly how I came up with the concept, but I've always thought that one of my biggest fears would be to end up in solitary confinement battling with all the thoughts around your head. It's definitely not a new idea in the world of Thrash Metal, but I feel like we have it our own unique twist and we could try to highlight some mental illnesses that so many people suffer from.
Any plans to release a new video for some track?
We released a video last year for our single "Asylum" which I think will be the only video for this album. We definitely plan to shoot a video for at least one song on our next album as well.
How was the recording and writing process?
The writing process was good, basically myself and Dave came up with guitar ideas and I would arrange the songs at home while recording the scratch tracks at the same time. Marlee took care of her own vocals and Scott and Jordan both adapted their own bass and drum lines respectively.
Recording was a little tedious, a couple of the members had little or no previous recording experience and suffered from "red light phobia" haha. It took a little longer than expected but I'm glad we stuck it out and put as much hard work as we did into it.
What was it like to work with Sliptrick records and how did that relationship develop?
Initially our relationship was great. They were quick to answer emails and showed promise of good marketing and PR worldwide.
Unfortunately we havent heard anything from them in about 5 months, as they haven't been replying to our emails and they don't seem to be doing all the marketing that we paid for. We hope they're doing okay and I'm sure they have a valid reason for everything.
How much each musician influence the album?
As far as music writing, I wrote the majority of songs, Dave wrote 2 entirely and contributed riffs in a couple others. Scott wrote his own bass lines, Jordan changed some of the drums I had programmed for the demos and Marlee wrote lyrics and vocal lines. Each of us have pretty varied preferences when it comes to personal music selection which I think comes through in each person's instruments.
Any plans to hit the road?
We had a 3 month tour planned this summer, starting in UK, Eastern and Central Europe then coming back to Canada for a tour and to play a few festivals. Unfortunately Covid-19 killed ours and many other bands plans this summer which was a huge bummer. But there's always next time I suppose! We would love to go this year but two of the members are going to school for a year.
What else is happening next in HYPERIA’s world?
As a band we are all going to be moving to Vancouver, Canada in a few months. It's a big change for us and we're excited as Vancouver is one of the main Entertainment hubs in Canada. We have almost a full album of songs written already and we plan to start recording later in the fall of 2020.
