Ukrainian Romantic Metal band Season of Melancholy has completed work on their second full-length album, titled In Sleep, which is scheduled for release on September 4th. The release features 12 tracks with a total running time of over 43 minutes. The material was written between 2018 and 2024.
Ahead of the album's release, Season of Melancholy have shared the live video for “Inmate”. Filmed during the band's recent performances, the clip serves as the first introduction to In Sleep and reflects both the emotional weight and the renewed energy found throughout the record. The album marks a distinctive chapter in the band's evolution. Alongside Season of Melancholy’s trademark melancholic lyricism and atmospheric sound, listeners will discover strong influences from post-punk, gothic rock, and a more dynamic, festival-oriented approach to songwriting. The band consciously returns to its musical roots while adapting its sound to resonate with a new generation of listeners.
“We want to be closer to younger audiences — people who are drawn to energetic and vibrant music today. At the same time, it is important for us not to lose the atmosphere and emotional depth that define who we are.”
The title In Sleep reflects on those who leave this world in their sleep — without saying goodbye or making peace with themselves. The band's vocalist admits that he once found this idea strangely romantic. Over time, however, the concept evolved into something far larger and more unsettling.
Yet In Sleep almost never came to life, which makes it an especially meaningful release for the band. In late February 2022, the musicians realized they had enough material for a full-length album and decided to unite their accumulated songs into a single work. The very next day, however, Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine shattered those plans. As a result, the recording process stretched over several years, with the band searching for the right producer while working under missile attacks, air raid alerts, and prolonged power outages.
“We wrote these songs during three completely different periods of our lives: when things were relatively stable, when the world faced the uncertainty of COVID-19, and when the horror of full-scale war arrived in Ukraine. That is why this album carries such a wide range of moods and emotions,” the band explains.
Throughout the recording process, Season of Melancholy continuously reworked the material — changing arrangements, discarding ideas, adding new elements, taking breaks, parting ways, and reuniting. The musicians describe In Sleep as an album about both personal and artistic growth. It reflects the belief that while music is built upon certain constants, it also possesses countless dimensions and possibilities.
Combining melancholic lyricism, controlled aggression, and anxious reflections on the modern world, In Sleep promises to become the most diverse, contrasting, and emotionally rich work in the history of Season of Melancholy.
