Review of WARTHRASH - No Light Shall Remain / Awakening Records
This one rips! Warthrash from Medellín, Colombia just dropped their second full-length No Light Shall Remain via Awakening Records, and it’s a proper old-school death/thrash beast! These guys have been around since 2005, and on this record they sound more focused and aggressive than ever.
The album is pure SA death metal with strong Swedish and American influences - think Death and Morbid Angel mixed with Entombed and Dismember, but filtered through that South American raw and bestial intensity. The riffs are fast, sharp and nasty, with plenty of thrashy gallops and occasional blast beats that hit hard. Songs like Culebras Sin Honor, Oscura Condena and Crucifixion are absolute rippers - massive, fast, direct and full of attitude.
What I like is that they also know when to slow down. Tracks like Hand of Doom and Abismo Sin Retorno have that heavy, majestic mid-tempo groove that gives the album breathing room and makes the faster parts hit even harder. The guitar work (especially from Merciless on lead) has some really cool moments - sharp leads and solid rhythm playing that keeps everything moving.
Caronte handles drums and vocals, and his growls fit the music perfectly - raw, aggressive and understandable enough. The whole band sounds tight, which is impressive considering they all contribute to the songwriting.
Production-wise it’s clear but still raw enough to feel underground. Nothing is buried, the guitars cut through nicely, and the whole thing has that organic, live-in-the-room energy that suits this style of death metal.
At 11 tracks it’s a solid length without overstaying its welcome. It’s not the most original record you’ll hear in 2026, but it doesn’t need to be. Warthrash know exactly what they want to deliver - fast, heavy, riff-driven death metal with thrash energy - and they do it very well.
If you’re into classic death metal with speed and attitude (old Death, Morbid Angel, Entombed, Dismember, or bands like Vader and Krisiun), No Light Shall Remain should scratch that itch nicely. A strong second album from one of the better Colombian death metal bands out there right now. Solid release! Fucking sick!
