Review of Bury the Hordes - Revenant
I put this on not knowing anything about the band and ended up running it again right after.
Bury the Hordes are a new band out of Plymouth, and Revenant is their first release. Seven tracks, sitting somewhere between deathcore, blackened riffing and melodic lead work. It’s heavy, but not just in the obvious way. There’s enough going on in the guitars to keep it from turning into pure breakdown worship. That’s what pulled me in.
A lot of the weight comes from the riffing itself. The tremolo parts give it that colder edge, while the leads add some space without softening anything. It keeps the songs moving. Nothing gets stuck hammering the same idea too long. That stood out fast.
The breakdowns are there, obviously, but they don’t feel dropped in out of obligation. They come out of the songs naturally, which makes them hit harder. That’s usually where younger bands trip up.
Luke West sounds convincing the whole way through. The higher screams cut through clean, and the lower growls carry enough weight underneath. No overdoing it, no weird forced theatrics.
The recording came out strong too. The guitars have bite, drums punch through cleanly, and the bass doesn’t disappear into the background. Everything sits where it should.
What I liked here is that the band already sound settled. Not finished, not fully locked into one thing yet, but settled enough that the songs feel like they belong together. You can hear the different influences, but it never feels messy.
By the end of the seven tracks, I knew I’d come back to it. That’s usually enough.
