Review of AETERE - Theogonie / Octopus Rising

Théogonie is the debut full-length from the French duo Aetere, and it's one of those records that takes its time revealing what it's doing. The first listen left me slightly puzzled. Not because it's difficult or overly experimental, but because almost nothing here is trying to grab your attention in an obvious way. No giant riffs. No dramatic payoffs every few minutes. The album just moves forward at its own pace and somehow ends up pulling you in anyway.

A lot of that comes down to atmosphere. The guitars are heavy, but they're wrapped in layers of haze and texture that stop them from feeling oppressive all the time. Everything seems to drift somewhere between warmth and coldness. One moment the album feels intimate, the next it feels completely distant.

I kept coming back to "Galea". Not because it's necessarily the heaviest track, but because it seemed to capture everything that makes the album work. Weight without constantly trying to crush the listener. The same goes for "Cilice". On the other hand, tracks like "Innocence" and "Eudaimona" allow a little light into the record, which makes the darker moments hit even harder later on.

What I appreciated most is that the duo never seems in a hurry. There were a couple of moments where I expected the songs to explode into some huge climax. Instead, they stayed patient and let the mood do the work. Looking back, that was probably the right decision.

The funny thing is that I enjoyed Théogonie more the less I tried to analyse it. ;)

By the end I wasn't thinking about influences, production or genre labels anymore.

I just hit play again.
