STARSCOURGE sound like they locked themselves in a room with blastbeats, fantasy paperbacks, a busted synth and zero self-restraint. Conqueror of the Stars – Betwixt Sundered Seraphim, the Lands Between Bleed is completely over the top and doesn’t apologize once. Long title, longer ideas, riffs everywhere. This is black/death metal that wants to be HUGE, not clever.
The album just keeps throwing shit at you: charging tremolo riffs, chunky melodeath hooks, choirs blasting in like some evil JRPG boss intro, leads flying off in every direction. Sometimes it’s tight, sometimes it’s messy, but it never feels lazy. You can tell these guys actually care about riffs, proper ones, not just endless blasting for the sake of it. There’s a strong heavy metal backbone under all the blackened fury, which gives the songs a sense of movement instead of just noise.
Vocals are wild. This record is obsessed with lore, war, gods, fate, rot, destiny, all that fantasy bullshit, and it leans into it HARD. If you hate bands that sound like they’re narrating a cursed manuscript, this will annoy you. If you miss when extreme metal was allowed to be nerdy and grandiose, you’ll eat this up.
The spoken parts? Yeah, they can drag. Some of them should’ve been cut or buried deeper in the mix. And the production is crowded, everything fighting for space, but that chaos kinda fits. This isn’t clean or elegant metal. It’s bloated, aggressive, dramatic and loud.
Conqueror of the Stars is excessive, ambitious, slightly stupid, and very fun. Not for minimalists, not for purists, not for people who need subtlety. But if you want riffs, speed, fantasy warfare and a band that clearly doesn’t know when to stop - STARSCOURGE deliver the goods.
