All We Leave Behind interview

Hi, All We Leave Behind. Greetings from Germany! What are you up to these days?

We are currently scheduling our upcoming gigs and continuing to rehearse to make sure we're fully prepared!

Would you please introduce your band to our readers who are not aware of your music?

We are All We Leave Behind, a Doom Metal band from Grenoble, France, founded in 2018. We blend Doom, Death, and Gothic influences.

Could you give us a little insight into the formation of the band? When and how did it happen?

All We Leave Behind was founded by two seasoned musicians: POG on guitars and growls, and Olaf on drums. The lineup quickly expanded with Hell D on guitar and, in 2021, S.CRUMB, a prominent local bassist, joined to solidify the rhythm section. Tony, POG’s son, initially joined on keyboards before taking over drums in 2022 following Olaf’s departure.

POG and Olaf had crossed paths before. Tony is actually POG’s son, but Scrumb and Hell D didn’t know anyone in the band before joining. So it was kind of a mix of old connections and fresh blood.

At what age did you guys start playing instruments, and since when have you been into metal music?

Scrum started with guitar at 19 then switched to bass just before he turned 26. POG began with classical guitar at 7, then electric guitar at 16. HellD went straight to electric guitar, also at 16. Tony has been playing drums for nine years. As for metal, we've all been into it since our teenage years.

All We Leave Behind is about to release In Absence of Light. Could you tell us something about it and walk us through all the track's lyrics and meanings?

Lyrics are exploring profound themes such as ecology, religion, and the fragility of the human condition. If we had to summarize a message in this album, it would be "Despite the darkness, there is always a glimmer of hope", as we can see on the cover art.

How has the response been so far from listeners? Have you started working on new songs?

We've been getting a really positive response from everyone around us, and we're constantly writing new material... we even have too much stocked up right now, so we have to make tough choices about what makes it onto the albums!

When and where did you play your first gig? How was the experience of going live for the first time?

Our first gig was in September 2021. It was both stressful and incredibly exciting!

Have you ever had an epic fail moment during a gig?

Shortly before the release of our first album, we decided to play the whole thing live. Before the end of the show, the venue manager told us we had gone over the allotted time, and we had to drop the last track of the album from our set at the very last minute, which was quite a letdown for us.

If asked to differentiate All We Leave Behind from other bands in your country, how would you respond?

Well, we're definitely the best, obviously (laughs).

How compatible are the band members with each other?

We hate each other, but we make it work (laughs)! No, kidding aside, the vibe in the band is actually very good.

Which bands/artists do you draw your influences from, and which are your favorite local bands?

We are influenced by Paradise Lost, Black Sabbath, Candlemass, Type O Negative... We have a great local scene in Grenoble with our friends from Star Rider, Hellixxir, Garden Of Erden, Datura Inoxia...

How do you guys manage your jobs and gigs, and how often do you gather altogether just for fun?

We meet every week to rehearse and sometimes to grab a few beers. Juggling work and music isn't always easy, but we're managing it so far.

All We Leave Behind is a very promising formation. Looking at your future, where do you see yourselves in 5 years?

We hope to keep growing our audience, play more shows and festivals, and release new material!

Well, that’s it. Thanks a lot for your time. Could you speak out to all your fans and supporters?

Thank you for your continued support, and thanks to everyone who will listen to us and buy our new album!
