Straight outta the gritty, post-industrial sludge of Liège, Belgium, MoldEra’s Colonize is a beast of an album that hits like a sledgehammer wrapped in mossy fuzz. Born in 2018, these four moldy weirdos cook up a thick stew of stoner doom, progressive rock, and post-metal, with a side of sludgy grunge vibes. Think Yob’s slow-burn heaviness meets Isis’ atmospheric crush, spiked with the raw, angsty edge of Alice in Chains or Deftones. It’s the kind of sound you’d hear echoing through a crumbling factory at midnight.
Colonize is their second full-length, and it’s a step up from their 2022 debut Waste Pile Dunes. The riffs are massive, plodding, and hypnotic, dragging you into a tar pit of sound. Layers of texture pile on like fungal growth, with Florian Zanatta’s vocals snarling and soaring over lyrics ripping into industrial greed, ecological ruin, and societal decay. It’s pissed-off, but there’s a flicker of hope in the chaos - like mold creeping over a wrecked world, hinting at rebirth. Tracks feel alive, shifting from crushing doom to proggy, atmospheric breaks that suck you in deep.
This album’s a communal gut-punch, written by the whole band, and you can feel the sweat and dirt in every note. It’s not perfect, sometimes the ideas sprawl a bit too wild, but damn, it’s raw and real. If you’re into heavy, thought-provoking sludge with a stoner soul, Colonize will leave you banged-up and grinning. Crank it loud and let it rot your speakers.
