Review of LORQUIN'S ADMIRAL - Lorquin's Admiral / Argonauta Records

I gave Lorquin’s Admiral a listen right after it dropped June 27 on Argonauta Records. It’s a stoner rock album, but not the usual kind that sounds overly polished or like it’s been run through a filter a dozen times. This one feels intentionally rough around the edges - kinda like Kyuss meets Queens of the Stone Age, but with more unpredictability. Some parts feel like they’re still figuring things out mid-jam, which gives the album an authentic, live energy. That chaotic vibe actually makes it work.

There’s a warm fuzz and analog edge in the mix that adds character and texture. The album lurches along like a dust storm - some parts slow and heavy, then it dives into psych-blasted freakouts. The guitars sound sun-baked and loud, stretching out into trippy, colorful moments that add surprising depth.

The vocals bring an authentic edge, balancing grit with surprising control. For me, the track “Inexplicable Things” really stands out - the band clearly prioritizes vibe and momentum over polish, and it pays off.

There’s a lot of mood shifting throughout the record. Some songs start brooding and tense, then open up into warm, psychedelic passages. Other times, it drags you through gritty, desert rock sludge - but in a way that feels immersive and alive. You get the feeling of old amps and sand stuck in your teeth, with blues and alt-rock weirdness baked in, so it never gets stuck in one genre.

Far from being a flaw, the album’s loose and spontaneous nature adds to its charm - it feels like a snapshot of a band caught in the moment, full of energy and life. If you’re into bands like Yawning Sons, or just prefer your stoner rock rougher and more organic, this one’s definitely worth a listen.

P.S. And there’s a little twist about the lineup too - but I’ll leave that for your own discovery 😉.
