Hi! Can you tell me about VOID KING? Why did you choose that name for the band? What kind of ideas does the band explore?
The name Void King is one of those things that we settled on because it resonated with us. I think I said something that sounded like something else, but we all ended up liking it. We are all over the place, as far as idea exploration goes. This new record is a concept record, based on a night terror I had about the multiverse and the idea of an infinite amount of lives and times. It isn't an easy subject to write about, but I feel like we've made it approachable.
The Hidden Hymnal - Chapter II to be released end of this month. How does that make you feel? Do you feel that you have put the album out to the masses without any desire to change anything now?
The record is the record. I feel like it stands on it's own. We are very proud of the work that has been done here and I can't think of anything we could have changed.
Can you tell me more about The Hidden Hymnal - Chapter II? What were the ideas behind the album?
As mentioned, this is a concept record. And for us, that is something way outside of our comfort zone. We really challenged one another on this album to do things that we might not normally do. To really explore our instruments and step outside of the "doom" or "stoner" thing when we wanted to. I think that comes through on all of the songs.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
Everything around us. Politics. Life experience. Travel. Daily interactions with other humans. You can't help but be influnced by those things.
How would you best define VOID KING's sound?
Loud. Even when we play quietly, there is a depth to our sound that I think marks our tunes.
Are you on hiatus now, just relaxing and looking for album feedback, or have you started composing new material immediately?
I don't see us writing for some time. We have released a lot of music in the last year, and we'd like to play some shows and get back out there among the people.
Who are your main musical influences? How much of an impact have they had on your sound?
We grew up listening to just about everything. For me, I loved thrash and hip hop when I was growing up. But I also lived with and through the grunge era. So those bands show up from time to time when we start writing as well.
Is there a particular well-known musician that you would like to collaborate with on one of your upcoming albums?
I don't think so. All of them? None of them? I love Page Hamilton from the band Helmet. So maybe him I guess.
What is your personal strategy for getting your music heard by a larger audience?
Word of mouth. Playing shows. You just have to grind. there's no magic formula I reckon. Your music either resonates with people or it doesn't.
Do you have any hobbies besides music?
Disc golf. Collecting star wars stuff. Photography for a couple of the guys. We are a diverse crew.
Are you all supported by your families in your dedication to music?
Absolutely.
