Review of Medusian - Library

Symphonic metal is one of those genres that feels larger than life. It’s dramatic, it’s heavy, and when it’s done right, it pulls you into a completely different world. Library, the latest release (debut EP) from Gothenburg’s Medusian, doesn’t just dip a toe into these waters - it dives in headfirst. This isn’t just music; it’s a whole mood. The band’s approach to the genre hits the sweet spot between the grandiose and the gritty, creating something that feels both massive and surprisingly grounded.

Right away, you can hear how much care has gone into this album. Every element feels deliberate, like it’s been placed just so. The guitars are relentless but never overbearing. The bass lines weave in and out, anchoring the chaos without getting lost in it. And then there’s the orchestra. It’s not just background noise or a gimmick. It’s a central part of the sound, and it’s clear the band knows how to use it.

A lot of symphonic metal bands lean too hard in one direction - either drowning in orchestral bombast or forgetting that they’re supposed to be metal in the first place. Medusian walks that line like they’ve been doing it forever. The songs are heavy where they need to be, but they’re also packed with melody and emotion.

Library isn’t without its rough edges. At times, the ambition of the arrangements can make things feel a bit cluttered. Some moments feel like they’re fighting for space instead of working together, which can be distracting. And while the album as a whole flows well, a few transitions between sections feel a little forced. But honestly, these are minor issues in the grand scheme of things. The sheer energy and creativity on display more than make up for it.

If you’re into symphonic metal, Library is a no-brainer. It’s got everything you could want from the genre: powerful riffs, and enough drama to keep things interesting from start to finish. It’s bold, it’s intricate, and it’s unapologetically over the top - in the best way possible. Medusian has set the bar high, and I wouldn’t be surprised if their next release takes things even further.
