Review of Antipope - Doors of the Dead / Moribund Records

It’s hard to sum up in a neat sentence, really. This extreme metal album pulls you in - no easy 'background listen' here - with both intense and progressive elements throughout. First, the guitar work. Not just heavy for the sake of heavy, if that makes sense. There’s a lot of intensity, but then suddenly it’ll take this shift, and you’re hearing these eerie, open sounds that just hover in the air. It’s like wandering from a dark cavern into an open sky.

And then, the drumming. Really tight but not overpowering; it’s got this way of keeping things grounded even when everything else starts to go wild. The rhythms almost feel like they’re building something up, like a tension you want to lean into, not away from.

Then there are the vocals. They come in with these deep, growling moments that are intense, no question. But out of nowhere, you get these soaring parts, almost like a haunting echo. Adds so much to the whole experience - it’s both raw and, in parts, even a bit surreal.

I think what makes this album hit differently is that it really does feel like a journey. There’s not one single thing to point to; it’s a buildup of everything going on together, like each song is part of a bigger puzzle. And every time I re-listen, I pick up something I missed before, whether it’s a small shift in the guitar line or just how the vocals add depth.

If you’re up for something that keeps surprising you and doesn’t just stick to one thing, this album’s worth it. Not background music; it’s something you dive into. And yeah, I’ll be going back in for sure.
