Review of Severed Angel - Severed Angel / Sliptrick Records

Melodic metal band Severed Angel makes a powerful debut with their self-titled album, a collection of nine captivating songs that showcase the band's musical prowess and songwriting abilities. The album's creation was a three-month-long endeavor, encompassing the processes of writing, recording, mixing, and mastering. Additionally, Severed Angel includes their cover of Ghost's "Square Hammer," adding a unique twist to the tracklist.

Every aspect of the album, from writing to production, was handled by the talented members of Severed Angel themselves. Vocalist/guitarist Alex Repetti took charge of the mixing, while the mastering duties were expertly executed by Joel Wanasek. Drawing influences from a diverse range of bands, including Helloween, Soilwork, Unearth, Dream Theater, and Fear Factory, Severed Angel has crafted a modern melodic and progressive sound that is uniquely their own.

In a world often dominated by negativity, Severed Angel emerges as a refreshing counterpoint. Through their introspective and empowering songwriting, the band tackles themes of self-reflection, awareness, and personal growth, providing a much-needed alternative to the mainstream narrative.

The album kicks off with "Introspection," an instrumental piece featuring spoken word from Ralph Viera, vocalist of Combat and Thrash Or Die, setting the stage for the sonic journey that awaits. "In The Red" bursts forth, instantly grabbing the listener's attention with its dynamic energy. The relentless assault continues with "Dogs of War," showcasing the band's ability to create an intense sonic experience. The title track, "Severed Angel," slows the pace, allowing for a moment of respite before the emotionally charged ballad, "A New Beginning," takes center stage.

Severed Angel demonstrates their versatility with "Wide Awake In Screamland," a track that sees them venture into a more hard rock-oriented sound. "Attachment Unavailable" delves into the dark side of social media dependency, exploring the negative aspects of seeking validation online. "Number 8" unleashes a relentless thrash metal onslaught, showcasing the band's impressive musicianship and delivering a worthy tribute to the giants of the genre. Concluding the original portion of the album is "With Wings Anew," a triumphant hymn that serves as the closing piece in a trilogy suite, following "Severed Angel" and "A New Beginning."

The album comes to a powerful close with their cover of Ghost's "Square Hammer," which serves as the band's first single. Severed Angel's rendition adds their own unique flavor while paying homage to the original.

Severed Angel's self-titled album is a cohesive and well-crafted musical journey that demonstrates their artistic growth and potential. The additional contributions of spoken word by Ralph Viera and background vocals by Gail Bourque add depth and diversity to the album's sonic landscape.

Released on May 2nd, 2023, via Sliptrick Records, "Severed Angel" introduces the world to the talent and vision of the band. Led by the compelling vocals of Alex Repetti, and supported by the stellar musicianship of Lou Mavs on guitar/vocals, George Dimitri on bass guitar, Marc Muchnik on keyboards, and Wayne Noon on drums, Severed Angel proves themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the realm of melodic metal.
