Hail! One thing I appreciate about Greek black metal is that it never developed the same obsession with purity that consumed other scenes. Even the classics often sounded willing to experiment. Do you think that openness remains part of the Hellenic identity today?
Black metal should remain true to its root. This does not mean one must not be able to expand it neither experiment a little or more. Yes openness can be dealt with a combination of tradition and experiment but not in a way that balance is destroyed.
Your previous material was described as moving away from traditional Hellenic black metal toward something more abstract. Now the new album is presented as both proudly Hellenic and highly individual. Was that a conscious reconciliation of those two impulses?
The new album is for sure a highlight of ceremonial worship creativity status and has nothing got to do with impulses or comparison of earlier works of ours.
The press release references the "Big Three" only to immediately distance the band from them. Let me challenge that slightly: is it even possible to play Hellenic black metal in 2026 without being judged against Rotting Christ, Varathron and Necromantia?
Ofcourse you can play black metal music in 2026 without having to compare to other great Hellenic black metal groups such as mighty Necromantia. Individualism in black metal art is the key for everything.
Many younger listeners discover Greek black metal backwards. They know the classics, but have little knowledge of bands like Legion of Doom, early Kawir, Agatus, Macabre Omen, Zemial or the countless forgotten names that helped shape the scene. Which records do you think deserve far more recognition than they receive?
Next question please…. either way you see it lots of gems did not get the response they deserved!
The phrase "second wave of Hellenic black metal" appears frequently these days, but I'm not convinced everyone means the same thing when they use it. What distinguishes that era from the bands that came before it?
The key factor is to keep the spirit and flame of true fucking black metal alive and burning! No compromise just evolution but through strong roots!
The album is presented as combining the strengths of multiple eras of Greek black metal. Yet many bands attempt similar things and simply end up sounding nostalgic. What prevents Between Sleep and Death from becoming an exercise in historical recreation?
Between sleep and death is not a nostalgic crap stories. The music execution itself prevents it from being such an exercise. Music and lyrical manifestation shows the way!
The lineup expansion seems significant. CEREMONIAL WORSHIP began as a solitary vision but now functions as a complete band. Did that change the way songs are written, or merely the way they are executed?
All the songs in between sleep and death were made possible through proper and different ideas but under the banner of black metal.Every member contributed for this creation.
Black metal often celebrates chaos, but the best records are usually the result of enormous discipline. When you speak of delivering chaos, what exactly does that mean in practical terms?
When one listens to this material will automatically enter the magic era of chaos. Practically we live in chaos, why not spread it?
The title Between Sleep and Death suggests a liminal state rather than outright destruction. Is the album concerned more with transformation than annihilation?
When you are between sleep and death, you are transforming…so you have two choices, evolution or annihilation.
Greek black metal traditionally possesses a strong sense of movement and journey, almost unlike any other scene. Even the most aggressive records often feel strangely adventurous. Do you think that quality still defines Hellenic black metal?
Quality exists for a few. While others try to mimic for sure ceremonial worship stands out!
The production strikes a balance between force and atmosphere, but let me play devil's advocate for a moment: many modern black metal bands claim to pursue atmosphere when they're actually compensating for weak songwriting. What role should atmosphere play when the riffs themselves are carrying the weight?
Riffs and in general, all the orchestration, can offer atmosphere.Atmosphere is spreading out the way it shall be. Some understand it, some don’t.
What is the most underrated Greek black metal release that never received the attention it deserved?
Once again…this question does not apply to me…I do not wish to talk or mention other bands efforts, apart from a few which I keep it to myself!
You formed in 2016, which means CEREMONIAL WORSHIP belongs neither to the ancient guard nor to the newest generation. Do you feel caught between those worlds?
I don’t think we belong to neither the past nor the future. We belong between sleep and death.
The underground today seems increasingly obsessed with preserving black metal history. Yet black metal originally became exciting because bands ignored expectations and created something new. Has reverence become a bigger problem than ignorance?
Obviously.
The album is described as inaugurating a "new era" for the band. Looking at it objectively, what would constitute failure? In other words, what would make you look back in five years and conclude that this supposed rebirth never actually happened?
Nothing shall make me look back and consider as a failure because I strongly believe in this project.
Let's talk about the dragon. Every black metal press release promises awakening dragons, ancient powers, forgotten gods and eternal darkness. Why should listeners believe yours is anything more than another symbol recycled from the genre's vocabulary?
Let the story unfolds to see if the Dragon has really awaken!
The return of The Whisperer of Night after several years away is presented as a crucial development. What did he bring back to CEREMONIAL WORSHIP that was missing before?
Nothing was missing and nothing is.The whisperer of the night was and he still is present and an integral and essential part of ceremonial worship.
If somebody unfamiliar with Greek black metal hears Between Sleep and Death and immediately says, "This sounds unmistakably Hellenic", what specific element do you hope they're responding to?
I will answer with a quote from esoteric struggle track….Welcome to my world of illusions…here you find empty pleasures and pain….there is your specific element.
